Start of my investment journey

I graduated from a local university and started to work in Nov 2010 at the age of 24. With my monthly savings and bonuses, I invested in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).

Why REITs? The main reason is that I took a module on real estate finance during my undergraduate days, and I learnt about REITs from that course. I understand how this investment vehicle works and I felt comfortable investing in it. Another reason why I invested in REITs is that the dividend payouts are regular and relatively frequent throughout the year. REITs which I invested into pay out dividends about four times in a year. It felt great and it was fun seeing dividends being credited into my bank account every few months!

REITs I invested into were Cambridge Industrial Trust, Suntec REIT, First REIT and Sabana REIT. I sold all of them away in 2013, and made a small profit from the capital appreciation (in addition to the dividends that I have been collecting through the two plus years).

Perhaps I could share about what I did after I sold off my holdings in REITs in my next post.
